Recently, I had the unique honour of visiting the Lanificio Ermenegildo Zegna & Figli in Trivero, the historic wool mill that serves as the beating heart of the Zegna universe. Nestled in the serene hills of Piedmont, this remarkable place is where every Zegna fabric begins its journey—from raw fleece to thread to textile.
Founded in 1910, the wool mill has been the backbone of Zegna’s evolution for over a century. For four generations, the Zegna family has masterfully balanced science and nature, tradition and technology, to craft what are today considered the most refined menswear fabrics in the world.
From the selection of raw materials to the final finishing processes, every step is carried out in-house. The pristine waters of local mountain rivers are used to wash the fabrics, giving them their trademark softness and purity. This commitment to complete vertical integration ensures exceptional quality and consistency—values we at Ferala hold in the highest regard.
A Museum of Vision and Values
Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Paolo, one of Zegna’s commercial directors, and Aurore, who shared the brand’s rich history with remarkable passion. Just beside the factory lies a beautifully preserved heritage museum, created to celebrate the legacy of Ermenegildo Zegna himself.
Walking through the museum felt like stepping into the mind of a visionary—one who, over 110 years ago, envisioned not only a world-class textile house, but also a vibrant community around it. The museum showcases early business documents, original company logos, and the evolution of the factory’s development alongside the enchanting Oasi Zegna, a reforested natural reserve that reflects Ermenegildo’s deep commitment to people and the planet.
This dual dedication—to human dignity and environmental stewardship—remains at the core of Zegna’s philosophy to this day. Employees were offered not just work, but homes, shops, health care, and leisure—a revolutionary concept at the time. This human-centric model continues to inspire us at Ferala, as we believe true luxury is not only seen but also felt through purpose and integrity.
Nature and Innovation in Harmony
Zegna’s passion for nature was as strong as his pursuit of excellence. Understanding the ecological footprint of textile manufacturing, he took steps—unheard of at the time—to give back to the environment. The reforestation project surrounding the mill was just the beginning.
Today, Zegna remains at the forefront of sustainable textile production. The mill now runs almost entirely on renewable energy, recycles more than half of its water, and employs cutting-edge systems to recover lost fibers and transform them into new, sustainable fabrics. The second part of my visit was dedicated to understanding the technical precision behind Zegna’s iconic fabrics. From the meticulous cleaning and combing of raw fleece to the spinning and dyeing of threads, every phase revealed the obsession with detail that defines Zegna’s excellence.
In the weaving hall, I witnessed state-of-the-art looms—such as the Jacquard and air looms—bring to life fabrics of extraordinary texture and complexity. But what truly elevates Zegna’s materials is the finishing process. Steaming, pressing, and heat techniques are employed with surgical precision to perfect the fabric’s structure, drape, and sheen.
Finally, each fabric undergoes rigorous quality control, ensuring that only flawless textiles bear the Zegna name. This relentless pursuit of perfection is not just a process—it is philosophy.
